Trying to dodge God
Jeremiah gave the Israelites plenty of warning that the Babylonians were coming. What they failed to do was to heed Jeremiah's advice to go peacefully to Babylon. Those who tried to dodge the prophesy were annihilated. Those who went to Babylon were spared.
So is God angry with us? Not really. I see this story as the process by which God separates the good from the bad in us. He uses the Babylonians to wipe out those parts in us that think they are smarter than God. He destroys the idolatrous aspects of our lives, and he takes the good into hiding where it can be raised up and nurtured so that it may once again flourish.
